What Nicole Oliveira dislikes about De Castro Gaia:
However, restaurants just as nice for better value on the quay. And don't order the breaded mash, a friend ordered this and it was just like baby food. Kept us entertained but not very filling. Our villa had a great view across the river to Porto from Guiya however if yours does not then the view from the terrace bar are fabulous View all feedback.

Had a late lunch here, food was delicious - especially the chicken salad. Decent priced port. The main thing that let it down is they charged 2.5€ per person for the smallest amount of bread and olive oil/tomato spread which is outrageous. We knew the price beforehand however thought it was for the portion. Even for the portion it would have been on the pricy side. Such a shame to leave on a sour note.
I celebrated my birthday this year at this lovely restaurant for the first time and I could not of have been more delighted with the place, food and service! We were given a table in a special table in a small room with an amazing view over the river and a little balcony where you could step outside to get some fresh air and enjoy even more the view. The dishes were based on old Portuguese traditional dishes with a special touch that were just delicious. The wine recommendations fit perfectly to the food we ordered and the staff were super friendly and attentive! Great Job!
This is a great restaurant with an enviable location overlooking the Douro river, simple, and I do not mean this in a negative way at all, fresh and delicious Porto specialities in a relaxed setting. We had a lovely selection of small bites and some large bites, from fried squid, deliciosuly tender octopus, smoked cod, black pudding, filopastry parcels with spinach, and veal. Fantastic wines and attentive and polite staff. There is also a great roof top bar, perfect for cocktails and photos. Highly recommend this restaurant.
We came to this restaurant based on other reviews... it was truly amazing. Upon being seated each of us received a glass of port wine. We had several very tasty and well prepared tapas, such as the Serrano ham, smoked mackerel, fried calamari with an exquisite tartar sauce, and octopus. Then for main courses we had veal cheeks with rice and chorizo ( excellent), veal Portuguese style with cabbage and shrimp with egg and bread. Desserts were all good too. Service was excellent and the prices were extremely reasonable given the quality of food.
Very good octopus, the best black pudding with apples and onion in Porto district. Olive oil... you shoul buy it in their shop...

By the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, you 'll find a bunch of small restaurants. But hey, not all are worth your time. DeCastro is a standout though. You won 't even notice it if you 're just strolling by, since it 's tucked inside the Porto Cruz building. You gotta head up to the third floor using the elevator. The service is quick, and the waitstaff are friendly and multilingual – they 're cool in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. But the real star is the food. We kicked things off with peixinhos da horta (green bean tempura) served with lemon mayo – really hit the spot. Then came my order, the veal steak with cured ham, while my wife dug into the duck leg. Both were seriously good, but the veal steak really is life-changing. Time for desserts. I went for the classic toucinho do céu (almond and egg cake) with raspberry ice cream, and my wife took a shot at the chocolate cake. Tough to pick a winner – both were superb. All said and done, I totally recommend giving this place a shot. The food is great, they 've got a terrace with sweet city views, and it won 't break the bank.
