Nice position in a little square just off the Zócalo, and the food was OK, but the service was irritating. For a start, we were given no time to examine the menu, two waiters hovering over us as soon as it was brought to the table, almost bullying us into making a quick choice. Secondly, although we were getting on fine ordering in Spanish from a young lad, the other (head?) waiter interrupted, seemingly to show off his English, and from that point the ordering became chaotic. This was repeated with the drinks, and when he butted in again when we were ordering coffee the results were farcical and we only got what we wanted when I insisted on reverting to Spanish. Lastly, they brought the main course before we had finished our starters, as if trying to rush us once again. We had the opportunity to go back there another evening but decided not to because of our irritating experience the first time.

Beautiful position in a small place right at Zócalo, and the food was OK, but the service was irritating. For a start, we gave no time to examine the menu, float two waiters over us as soon as it was put on the...table, bringing us almost into a quick choice. Secondly, although we were of a young boy on the Spanish Ordnen, the other (head waiter), apparently interrupted to show his English, and from this point the order became chaotic. This was repeated with the drinks, and when he collapsed again when we ordered coffee, the results were vast and we only got what we wanted when I insisted to turn back in Spanish. Eventually they brought the main course before we finished our ancestors as if they wanted to hurry again. We had the opportunity to go back there, but did not decide, because of our irritating experience the first time.
We had dinner here at the end of November 2016. My wife and I ordered separate fish dinner to share an appetizer and a wine. This was our first time and dinner in Veracruz. The waiter brought two glasses of wine and we couldn't drink them... I was pretty hard and told him that the wine was better used to clean the floors. He apologised and suggested another wine we brought, opened and made me taste. It was excellent and I asked him to just leave the bottle. The appetizer was enough dinner for two! So we were overwhelmed when they brought the food. My wife had the fish with garlic sauce that was okay, we are garlic people and it could have used at least twice as much. I had the Pescado veracruzano, the signature court of the city, and it was good. But we were so full with the appetizer, a kind of crab and mushroom fritata that we really did not finish our meals. But the waiter felt bad at the first wine he served and wanted us to be satisfied with everything else. I thank him that he replaced the wine without argument and assured him that we were very happy with everything. La Gaviota is the type of place you can go to have some drinks and a good meal for a reasonable price. Ask for Jose Cruz and he will see you get what you want!
