I love mexicali. I frequent mexicali, they have a very large menu of unique dishes and flavorful healthy choices. This is definitely more of a fusion mexican restaurant, so don't go expecting authentic mexican, but they have some excellent creative combinations, definitely some of the best fusion food you will get for the price. The place is definitely dark, and can be loud, so I recommend going early in the evening... View all feedback.
What Bruce Holmes doesn't like about Mexicali Cocina Cantina:
Bring ear plugs! Mexicali is a happening place, so much so that it is beyond belief noisy. At our most recent visit we could literally not hear each other across the table, This is not a new problem; we have repeatedly sworn off the restaurant because of the noise problem (at dinner; not nearly as bad at lunch ; when we do come back it's mostly because we live nearby and we're too lazy to go to someplace where your e... Nice Afternoon. My husband and I stopped in to Mexicali early afternoon on a Friday. We waited a bit to be served, but once we received our cadillac margaritas, we knew we were in a great spot. The extra spicy habanero salsa was great (but what's with the extra $0.75 for it? We had the lobster tacos which were decent (apparently Rachel Ray's favorite dish maybe she wasn't quite on her game that day , and the blue crab and shrimp quesadilla which had more heavy cheese than crab or shrimp. The best part of the afternoon was meeting a couple of the regulars at the bar, who were very interesting and informative. We especially enjoyed talking with Alfonzo, a regular who received his beer and app without even having to order. The bartenders were attentive and we appreciated their help in finding something fun to do that evening. All in all it was a very nice afternoon and we will certainly come back for another round at Mexicali.

I think by now, you all know about my addiction..... to cheese. Its incurable, insatiable, and downright sinful. My addiction brings me to Mexicali frequently for their Queso. Notice its not say Queso Dip... because it isn't a dip. It is a plate of 4 cheeses, melted together, broiled with jalapeno strips on top, that comes with quacamole, salsa, flour or corn tortillas, and chips. For $7 on their normal menu. Yes, it is a plate of melty, broiled cheese.... the cheese addict in me is drooling right now.
I discovered that Happy Hour at Mexicali runs 2x daily (from 4-7pm and from 11pm-1am) and offers alright drink deals and downright AMAZING food prices.
Safe safe safe. Just went for the first time since the pandemic. They are doing everything right to make me feel comfortable about safety. Paper menus, WELL spaced tables in a covered tent with no walls(SO much better than the packed tables I frequently see along Ventura), sanitizer everywhere, masked employees. On top of that, they did a great job making their outdoor tent super awesome. Great sound. Nice decor. Thank you Mexicali.
