Not your typical spot on Mass Street, up to you if that’s good or bad ; each time we’ve been there’s only been a handful of customers which makes the atmosphere strange with how big the space is. We enjoyed our beers though View all feedback.
What Julie Carr doesn't like about Black Stag Brewery:
Bartender was not very friendly to us but was happy to talk with the single guy at the bar. She didnt care to help us with a selection of the beer, even after we told her what our regular choice of beer was. That was a big mistake, we tip well for good service. This was our first visit and probably our last visit. Plenty of other places in town we can support. View all feedback.
My wife and I decided to give this restaurant a try tonight,. We were very pleased. We had the tots appetizer and split the 2am Burger (chicken instead of hamburger), we also ordered a side of beer battered onion rings. My wife usually only eats part of an onion at most places, she loved these. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. We will be a more frequent customer. We dined outdoor under the canopy. It was nice as well. Our waitress Angel was very attentive.
Didn’t have food here but we loved the beer! Wonderful variety and all well done. We probably tasted 8 or more. We didn’t plan to come because of the low rating but very glad we did. They opened shortly before Covid and then shut down and have been trying to catch up. They’ve had the staffing challenges that many have. Our experience was great and we would recommend and return. See for yourself!
Great food and service! Neat atmosphere with attractive design. Several bar bite options and shareable plates along with vegetarian options! Interesting beer list with something for everyone's taste! Fantastic place to grab a bite and hang out! Nice outdoor seating area with heaters, perfect for Kansas in the winter!
My friend and I arrived at the restaurant on a Monday night around 8pm, looking forward to watching a late KU game. Despite having reservations, the restaurant was empty so we decided to sit at the bar for some beers and food. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. The bartender did not greet us and seemed distracted when we arrived. Ordering a beer felt like an inconvenience each time. We both ordered burgers well in advance, as we needed to leave for the game soon. After a long wait and a couple of refills, I inquired about our food and mentioned that we might need it to-go. The bartender responded rudely, implying that everyone in the restaurant was in a rush and that they were doing their best. The burger and fries turned out to be decent, but the lack of considerate service made the whole experience not worth it. I would recommend avoiding this place.
It was a Friday at 5:00 so we decided to do dinner and a show. In the past the Black Stag has had a really good Happy Hour, so we decided to go there. We were waited on immediately by a server named, Chris. I ordered an India Pale Lager and the Happy Hour Nachos. The Menu said that all pints were $3. We then decided to also order the Gluten Free Shrimp Scampi Cabanera. We had the Cajun Shrimp Pasta a couple of weeks earlier and it was fabulous. The beer was excellent and the Nachos came out in about 5 minutes. The nachos were obviously made with grocery store materials. The jalapenos were more of a relish and the cheese was canned liquid cheese. When our Nachos were eaten, they removed our dirty plates, I had no silverware. When taking away our plates the server asked if I wanted another beer. I asked if the India Pale Lager is on Happy Hour. He said no. I asked which ones were on Happy Hour and he said that Happy Hour had ended. I looked at my iPhone and it said 5:48. I said, its still short of 6:00 and he said, it was 6:00 on “bar time so Happy Hour ended.” Our Scampi came out about 15 minutes later and our server had warned us that the Gluten Free pasta takes a bit longer. It was totally delicious except it needed a little salt for our taste. Our server asked if we had everything we needed and asked, “you got silverware? Good.” Then disappeared. So I grabbed silverware from another table. It was a scarcely attended restaurant, so this was not hard to do. After a few bites, we decided to get some salt hoping that our server would come by to check on us. After 5 minutes, I decided to walk the restaurant to find some salt, but there was no server or bartender to be found. So I found some salt and pepper at a table near the patio. It wasn’t until we had completely finished our meal that our server returned from never never land to ask if we needed anything. We said no and he handed us our bill in lightening quick fashion. I wonder whether our server secretly is a shareholder in the Free State Brewery across the street and he is trying to chase people over there. Well, he succeeded with us.So the bottom line is this. The Happy Hour is a ruse. There really isn’t one. The pints are regular price and the Happy Hour food is Meh. But the Gluten Free pasta is really good. So if you are a Gluten Free eater, come for the pasta, but don’t expect good service.
