Waited only 5 minutes to be seated outside on a beautiful Saturday evening. Party of 2. Attentive and kind staff. Every dish we ordered was fresh and flavorful. Mushroom soup. Les moules mariniere. Brussel sprouts. Chez Maman “mac and cheese”. We completed our dinner with cappuccinos and a caramelized apple tart. Looking forward to a return visit! Great location in the heart of Hayes Valley and within a short walk to... View all feedback.
What Jason Xiahou doesn't like about Chez Maman West:
Good service and good vibes. The sun was in our eyes but they tried their best to put up umbrellas to help us out. The food was good not great we got the croque madame and chicken apple sausage omelette. I’ll try the pancakes and French onion soup next time those seemed to be popular at the table. This has been my favorite go to place for delicious French bistro favorites for years. Service is always good, and food is super delicious. My default dish of choice is the moules (mussels) with frites, it’s SOO divine and has never disappointed! Their onion soup is also a must! My hubs usually gets the steak frites and is always a happy camper. And be sure to save room for dessert- their dessert crepes are not to be missed! 10/10!
If I lived closer, I would become a regular here. The service and quality of the food was phenomenal. Some dishes shined more than others. The rockstars of the night were the Truffle Mac and Cheese the Roasted Duck Confit. The staff was amazing efficient, friendly, and super knowledgeable.Truffle Mac and Cheese I scarfed this dish down as if it was a hearty soup on a cold winter’s day. The creaminess of the cheese blanketed over the macaroni, with hints of truffle made this dish stellar. Is it unique? Nah. But does it check all of the boxes for a Mac and Cheese? Yup. If you like Mac and Cheese, order it. If you’re so so about M&C, then pass on it and get something different.Roasted Duck Confit Fall off the bone confit. Loved the port reduction and as a guy who loves sauce, yup, I would have also drank this like soup. The duck was very tender, but don’t expect a crispy duck skin. The potato gratin was also executed flawlessly and paired nicely with the green beans.Mussels You get an option of several different bases. We chose the Thai and it tasted like a sweet Tom Kha soup. Solid dish. And if you like mussels you’d love the variety of different flavors.Burger Solid patty and the buns are ciabatta. Loved the caramelized onions. Nothing TOO special with this dish, but a solid choice for those who crave a burger.Escargots Classic herb and butter sauce. Escargots were a bit small, but again, a solid execution! Be sure to order some extra ACME bread to dip up the sauce : French onion soup I’m a stickler for a solid French onion soup and am always searching for the best there is. Is it the best I’ve had? No. Is it still really good? Yes. It had an excellent amount of cheese and a very good broth. What could have been better? The best French onion soup I’ve ever had made it in a way of preserving the crispy bread even inside of the broth. Is my preference technically authentic? Probably not, but it’s damn good : I would certainly still order this classic soup here next time I’m back : Rum raisin gelato Creamy, not too sweet, and a good dose of rum flavor.I look forward to returning here and will try the pork chop next ;
Overall pretty good the staff is nice the food is solid. The appetizers are the best things on the menu but the portions are a bit small $15 20 for a few bites each). French onion soup is well worth it though ?
Great food and service. Everything, from being seated to ordering to getting my food and getting the bill, was relatively fast and timely. But I went on a rainy day, and during non-peak hours. So, be mindful of that when you go. The entire menu looked really good. I went for the salmon on a bed of quinoa, and i really enjoyed it. The space is cute and feels more like a cafe than a quaint European bistro, so I wouldn't necessarily come here for an intimate date. But the spot has the potential to be a date spot with a little bit more investment in the ambience. I really loved how simple the menu is. It made the food seem more carefully and thoughtfully curated. Will definitely visit again.Parking: If you can, it's better to use a rideshare or take public transportation. On peak days/times you'll spend as much time looking for parking as you would eating your meal.Wheelchair accessibility: The space is small, but entrance is wheelchair accessible. There's heated outside seating, which will probably be more comfortable, room-wise, for wheelchair seating.
