What Oren Hessel doesn't like about Sucrerie Lavigne:
Everything tasted very ordinary and, to add insult to injury, you had to get up and get it, buffet-style. I had the impression the ham was rancid. The eggs were cold. Les oreilles de Criss were nothing to write home about. The pancakes were oozing with fat and I don't think there was maple syrup in the sugar pie. No milk was offered to the children. We were a large group who usually go to another cabane a sucre in the area but we decided to try something different simply because it was unlimited taffy on snow and you could bring your own wine (although we met for breakfast so didn't bring anything). It was very chaotic .... the line that starts for the buffet and the place to buy tickets is together, so people were getting upset about the double wait. The food was mediocre, ham was warm cold cuts and not actually ham roast. Bacon was not your typical bacon either. The food is cooked then placed on a table without warmers, but luckily the food goes fast, but I found the potatoes to be cold and I had to wait for a fresh batch. I asked for butter but was told they didn't have any. Not much actually cooked with maple syrup and only one half bottle of syrup on each table for about 15 people. It was very crowded so we had to sit by the front door that was constantly being opened. So we ended up eating with our coats on and the kids gave up eating because their hands were too cold. Once we went outside to get the taffy on snow, that's when it got really chaotic. There is a small courtyard area that is very cozy with an open fire but can get really crowded quickly. There was a very small window where you can get the taffy on snow and then you stand should to shoulder trying to eat it. My daughter has long hair and as soon as the wind blew, her hair got caught on the strangers taffy around her which created a huge mess! They also have their horse and sleigh ride that runs right through the courtyard. So every 10 minutes, everyone has to move to one side, making it even more crowded. I have been to several cabane a sucre in the area but this one was my least favorite. It could be very quaint and cozy except that they allow too many people into a very small space. I would definitely suggest going elsewhere.
Can't believe we paid over $60 for 2 people for THIS !! Noisy dining room, disorganized way of working. The food was AWFUL , the cleanliness of the place VERY doubtful made us gag ! The taffy area small , the snow dirty an employee's kids were eating the taffy BEFORE the clients !Will not go there again !! This was our first
Exactly what I expect from a sugar shack. The place has character and is family operated by friendly and attentive staff. The food is excellent and served 'buffet style' which is a great way to reduce food waste.

On the other hand the service (limited) was good and the staff was nice. I would suggest instead you try the Handfield cabane à sucre in St-Marc: it's in another category altogether. the place looks gorgeous. Even if the prices are about the same, there is excellent food and service and you can eat all you want (and order alcool, if you feel like it). It's not in the same region, but it's worth the detour.
