What User doesn't like about Vero International Cuisine:
The tables are arranged to encourage sharing conversations with others, which means there's no privacy for intimate discussions. Additionally, the service can be slow when it comes to bringing the bill. View all feedback.
We've been here 3 times now, I think. It's a little bit funky, a little bit fine dining, and a whole lotta different. We keep popping in, mostly because I've heard wild raves about their oxtail stew: WHICH THEY'VE BEEN OUT OF EACH AND EVERY TIME! Uuuugggghhhhh!!!! The bright side is that allows me to try various other Afro-Caribbean delights, and explore their complex, deeply delicious menu... And the Ox-hunt keeps me coming back, as does the quality of each new discovery. I've liked everything I've tasted, except once, and that was something someone else ordered, and featured ingredients distasteful to me. Small plates, big plates, soups, salads, specials, service, drinks and atmosphere are all top-notch! They really pack it all into everything they do. Bravo!
The evening started with a perfectly prepared extra dry martini. I would encourage you to order the appetizer sampler. Choose four from a large and diversified list of appetizers. We chose two different styles of shrimp, the crabcake and the tuna chalupa. FANTASTIC!! We then moved onto the mains I had the spinach with palm which is an African style stew .... Absolutely delicious and we also had the fillet mignon which was perfectly cooked and an excellent piece of meat. We ate at the bar which is nicely lit and beautiful and always good opportunity to meet other folks and see what they're eating. Couple next to us ordered the salmon shown in the picture and absolutely fantastic perfectly cooked and on our next visit that's what we're having.
Very disappointed after reading the reviews...expected more. The waitress was pleasant and prompt. We enjoyed the plantains, the calamari was dry and tough. The spinach stew...served lukewarm and nothing to write home about. My husband had the Salmon and it too was nothing special. We never got bread or our salads and when we asked when we saw our entrees being set down in front of us the waitress offered to bring them then...a little too late as our entrees were already cooked. No offer of any reduction in the price (which was over $100) and frankly we won't be making another return. There were 5 other tables total in the restaurant and everyone else managed to get the bread and their salads.
Came up for Illinois as trip advisor, yelp, and good said Vero opened at 4. Closed. Not a light on. Very mad disappointed.
My wife and I ate here tonight. Overall we were a little disappointed especially because our first impression was so good. We really enjoyed the first half or so of our time here. It's a pleasant atmosphere and the food is good, but not really worth raving about. It took almost 2 hrs just to get our entrees in a fairly empty restaurant. Our waitress was super nice and polite, but there's really not much you can say or do to make a 2 hour wait for average fine dining OK. With the prices where they are and the wait as long as it was, the food would have had to have been spectacular to make it worth it. We won't be making it a point to come back soon.
