Sfizi Del Palato - POLICORO

After breaking our journey by train between Cefalu Sicily and Lecce Italy we decided to overnight in Policoro and then to find somewhere to eat! We both had enough of pizza and pasta and were looking for a meat meal.....well THIS IS THE PLACE TO COME! Meat is their passion and we have to say it was our best steak on our 15 week trip from Australia....it was magnificent, that is an understatement! This is a working butcher shop and restaurant by night, you can chose your cut from their refridgerated display cabinet, they had steak from all over the world! We chose to have Italian meats to support local and it did not disappoint....the most tender, well cooked and delicious steaks! Oh and the bread is to die for, a family recipe for over 70 years, its all about the yeast! Its not all about the food all the time, its the people that make this all happen and are so passionate about what they do and where they come from....this family is the most caring, beautiful and genuine people it shows as they serve you! The prices are reasonable for the quality of meat, simple is best, all we had was a tomato salad (you haven't eaten tomatoes until you have eaten them in Italy) and some delicious fried potatoes! It was just the best washed down with some local red wine....a highlight of our 15 week trip! Nino, the owner, is a second generation butcher in town supported by his lovely wife Rosa and son Francesco, Nino you have to be very proud of your son, what a magnificent young man making sure everyone is happy and looked after. I wish you were near us in Australia we would definitely be regular customers. Thank you for having us and making us so welcome.

So we stopped in randomly after another place was closed, but so glad we did. The food was incredible with fine dry aged cuts from all over Europe, mostly Italian and many local to the area. The wine also beautiful and the staff 100% complemented the meal with their warmth and family welcome... it was terrific to say the least. Highly recommend!

Carne deliziosa, eccezionale ospitalità dei gestori. L'unico difetto è che servono la carne cotta che hai scelto in macelleria senza distinguere i vari tagli. Ma sono perdonati. L'ho dimenticato. Il pane di mattoni è delizioso.
