After the shock of being accosted whilst reading the menu out side by the manager we enjoyed the lunch menu today. The Brittany fish soup was excellent and our three different main dishes bought sounds of delight and satisfaction from us all. View all feedback.
What Patrick James doesn't like about Le Gil:
Pleasantly situated just behind the cathedral, this bar restaurant has a great position, plenty of covered seating and a decent menu.Service was fine.I had lamb cutlets which were a little fatty and pretty tasteless; my wife had 'fish and chips (okay.) Followed by a strawberry Tiramisu (good) and a Café Gourmand (too much chocolate sauce).50cl of wine was almost 14 euros, so not cheap within an overall bill of 54 eur... View all feedback.
This restaurant is well placed and opposite the antiques market on the street - so we ended up with a couple of French bargains too! The menu is typical French bistro/brasserie - steaks, salmon, etc. Reasonable mix and if you persevere the staff will inter-change items should you need them to do so for diet reasons etc. Very French in attitude and lots of locals eating there who, on this occasion, weren't very good at keeping their young children in check!Would revisit but probably only for lunch and not dinner.
Stopped for an evening meal. Had the entrecote steak with blue cheese sauce. Meal was lovely. The blue cheese sauce was to die for. A walk around the area was really nice. Would visit again.
The Bistrot Le Gil has a perfect location at Place Charles De Gaulle. The square is the natural meeting point for the city´s youth and students with restaurants and bars. Le Gil is one of those and the restaurant was quite busy when we arrived. The waiter found us a table outside the restaurant facing the square. Inside the restaurant there was live music and it was quite good. Our waiter was a young guy who worked hard and was really friendly - and even fluent English speaking. We ordered some foie gras as a starter and followed by onglet de boeuf and cotes de agneau au grill. The food and our Cotes de Rhone was really nice. We ended the meal with a tarte fine aux pomme and some cognac. All in all we had a great evening.
We found the place just walking around the city centre and no regret. The weather was great so we took advantage of the tables outside in the terrace for the dinner, and enjoy the views to the main plaza.I asked the waiter for a recommendation and had a rissotto with prawns and a kind of mushrooms sauce and salad as side.Sweety and tasty rosé to drink and we wanted to try the french tortitas for the dessert which did our night! A small treasure for food lovers.Cannot wait to be back and try another choice :)
If you are in Poitiers and feel like having a salad! le Gil is the best choice. highly recommended : )
