Escaping the tourist invasion in Hallstatt, this lovely gasthaus in the woods was a welcome retreat with the river flowing to add to the ambiance. Great summer terrace. The food is both traditional and modern with such surprises as seibling carpaccio or homemade goat cheese...noodles with mushrooms, spinach and pesto. Everything was first rate and presented well. This place is a hidden gem for sure. Must visit. View all feedback.
What Abbey Flatley doesn't like about Gasthaus Koppenrast:
We waited in front of the restaurant as the property asked from the new guests. After 5 minutes waiting, and after eye contact with 3 waitresses went inside. Again 5 minutes waiting, without any contact. Then asked where is our mask? (Nobody has mask inside)...I went to the car to get the masks, and then they told us there in no free space for us. Absolutely unaccepted behavior. Not a professional attitude. View all feedback.

We went to look at this restaurant after reading the Trip advisor reviews. It looked lovely so we decided to book for later that evening but they were full so had to reserve for the next day. The restaurant is in a lovely setting at...the edge of the woods at the edge of the mountains and next to the river. There is outdoor seating but we were seated indoors for dinner. There was a good mix of locals and other tourists. Service was very friendly and staff had excellent english. The food was traditional Austrian style but done in a much more refined style than we had experienced elsewhere. I had an excellent sea trout with fruity salad, and my husband had beautifully cooked beef cheek, a dish that is challenging to do well. Our daughters had pasta and pork schnitzel which was a huge portion. Pudding included stewed plum with wonderfully light semolina dumplings. The quality of all dishes was outstanding and the wine including a Gruner Veltleiner, was excellent. Overall, it was not cheap but value for money given the high standards.
