Contribute FeedbackShanghai City restaurant in Nanaimo offers a mix of experiences, with some customers finding the food to be average and service slow, while others have praised the delicious dim sum and courteous staff. The buffet has received mixed reviews, with some enjoying the variety of dishes and contactless serving, while others found the quality lacking. Despite the varying opinions, many agree that the restaurant would benefit from an upgrade to create a more pleasant atmosphere. Overall, Shanghai City seems to offer a decent dining option in Nanaimo, especially for those looking for Chinese cuisine in the area.
We ordered Dim Sum dishes and 1 main dish off the menu. The food was average, the service was really slow and the place was not full. We had to remind them on 3 occasions that we had not received our dishes, almond chicken and egg rolls. By the time we received our food, our friends were done. We will not return to this place.
I have been at Shanghai several times for lunch and it has been consistently great food (as buffets go) and consistently good, courteous service. The prices are also reasonable for a buffet, and there is a moderately wide selection of dishes to try. When Chinese people are dining in a Chinese restaurant that also has dim sum, that is a pretty good indication it is pretty close to the 'real thing'.
We enjoyed a mid week Dim Sum at this restaurant with our new friends. The two couples we went with frequent this place and invited us along! We went before the lunch rush.Easy access off Island Highway and very convenient if just coming from the Departure Baby terminal in Nanaimo. It is at the Brooks Landing Mall. Our friends ordered and our server remembered the order without writing it down.We were served Chinese tea and then a steady delivery of many delightful items. Served hot and very tasty with sauces. We had the use of chopsticks and cutlery when these little treats got a little slippery lol!It also serves a buffet. Weekends are busier apparently. Clean and well organized. Basic tables and chairs. Round and long tables for larger groups. We will return and maybe try the buffet.
They even ruin the fried chicken wings...and thats something you can usually depend on even at the most mediocre Chinese buffet. These ones had a bread like coating that made them heavy and flavourless. Also disappointing were the squid... Which had a chalky texture that remains in your mouth. The best dish was to my mind the steamed fish which looked like it should be bland but had a nice garlic marinade. The mixed vegetables were also nice and fresh and I enyoyed the ginger beef. Not much else was good. Our server was attentive.
Average Canadian style Chinese nothing special. staff were fine and the atmosphere was adequate.nice location
