We've had lunch here a few times and have always enjoyed the food and service. This time we had the lamb ribs, wedge salad, and burgers - all tasty. The problem with the visit was with the owner. I ordered a pot of beer and looked away a second, then saw that the owner was pouring a pint of beer by mistake. I said sorry, I ordered a pot. The bar and restaurant were very well attended during the Jazz festival. The menu had a good selection. Unfortunately the staff were run off there feet so everything took a little longer than expected but they still managed good humour.
We were hoping to spend a pleasant Sunday in Castlemaine, starting with lunch. At random we chose The Criterion Hotel. First off the bar was understaffed, the bartender was run off his feet and the wait to order drinks and food was very long. Seeing the barman was so busy, the customers were patient and sympathetic. Against our better judgement we ordered and then waited more than an hour for our meals. When we finally asked after our order we were told it was 10 minutes away; it took at least another 15 minutes and was unfortunately not worth the wait. The vegetarian burger had a greasy roll around it, the burger itself tasted strongly of stock powder or packet soup mix, the promised heirloom tomatoes amounted to one cherry tomato cut in half and it was all lukewarm, including the chips. The other meals we had were barely passable and also just lukewarm. My corn fritters were accompanied by a fennel salad; it was freezer cold and flavourless. It was only our hunger and hurry to get out of there that caused us to eat what we could and leave without complaining. Worst meal we’ve had for forever.
We were a late booking on Saturday night. The reception was awesome and this set the standard for the service for the rest of our meal. Our food was delicious and the wine list was fabulous. Glad I've moved to Castlemaine.
We stopped off at this place for a quick beer and a good pub feed and we were not disappointed. I ordered the chicken parma and when it arrived at the table I was shocked, not only was it huge but very thick and cooked to perfection. My friend ordered a steak and it was also cooked to perfection. DO yourself a favour and have a meal at this place. We will be back!
