While the ambiance and scenic views impress, service inconsistencies and menu execution leave room for improvement. Diners rave about inventive cocktails and certain dishes, such as the prime NY strip and delicious appetizers; however, long waits and miscommunications plague several visits. Guests have noted the need for better staffing, as overwhelmed servers struggle to keep pace. Despite these setbacks, many patrons appreciate the restaurant's potential, hoping for a brighter future under new management. For a tranquil brunch or a special occasion, it remains a lovely choice in this charming town.
Allegory is an outstanding restaurant. With the multitude of choices in Montclair. it's easy to overlook a hotel restaurant... but Allegory is an absolute stand out and should not be missed. The house cocktails are inventive and delicious. The menu is simple but expertly prepared with fresh ingredients... Seriously, a great spot that you should check out.
We reserved outdoor seating just to find that it wasn’t available. We were seated at 12:00 but no one came to our table for over 30 minutes so we went to the bar thinking we would get better service. The bartender told my date he would taken care of us at the table so we went back there. He took our order where I also asked for 2 waters as my date had a headache and wanted to take Tylenol. He never brought it. Midway through our food I was sure he would come check to make sure everything was okay. He did not. I went up to the bar to ask for the water again and was waiting. With an attitude, the bartender told me he would bring them over. To our surprised, he did. After he saw we had finished our meal, he cleared the table and did not come back for another 30 minutes. We weren’t far away and were in direct eyesight but neither him or any of the other employees seemed interested in taking care of us. It wasn’t until I asked to see a manager that the bartender came to offer us the check. When the manager did come over, I was surprised to see that he was on the floor while all of this was happening earlier!! You would think the manager would make the rounds to endure the guests are happy. But everything from beginning to end was terrible. He eventually took care of the food but I will never forget 2 hours I had to spend on my birthday weekend trying to get a drink, some water, and an entree. To say I’m thoroughly disappointed is understatement. I really hope the entire staff that was there yesterday can learn from this but I’ll never know because I will not be returning.
I think this restaurant is trying to hard to be more then what they are and that is just a restaurant inside of a hotel average at best but the waitress was ok I know my wife and I can be a little much because we are people that go to a lot of restaurant my coffee was cold food was ok wine was good my wife fish was ok at best but we made the best of it and as always I left a 40% tip even though she wasn't worth it but a over all 3 maybe if I come back it will be better

We loved our server! She recommended great entrees and when it came time for dessert brought us extra doughnuts because she saw it was someone’s birthday! That was perfect.
