Now known as Crafty Squires - this alehouse style venue offers 2 in-house brewed beers as well as a selection of Squires beers brewed elsewhere. The staff were very friendly in advising us on the different beers on offer. We wanted a light lunch so we both ordered the Ploughman's. This was very well presented and went really well with our beer. It consisted of chicken liver pate, pickles, aged cheddar, tomato chutney... View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about Portland Hotel:
The staff were not interested, the food was really bad and the experience was very disappointing! Being locals, we have given this venue ample times to prove they have improved, however, each time is the same. View all feedback.
The atmosphere was wonderful. The food was delicious. I ordered Irish sausages with mashed potatoes and onion gravy, while my companion had fish and chips. It felt like being in a traditional Irish pub. We dined in the attached dining room, which offered waiter service.
We made a reservation for dinner and were warmly greeted by a very friendly and attentive staff. The dining area was surprisingly quiet. We ordered the Fish n Chips (beer-battered fish fillet, chips, salad, tartare sauce) and the Beef Guinness Pie (Guinness sauce, creamy mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables) with a side of chips. The food was delicious and paired perfectly with Guinness Magners Apple Cider. I would like to return again, but next time sit at the bar to experience the lively atmosphere of an Irish pub that I am accustomed to. The quiet dining area was not quite my preference.
I really enjoyed the Guinness Pie with tender chunks of beef and great flavor. The Parma was a bit hard and dry for my taste, but the mussels were okay. I prefer a thicker, more flavorful chili. The fish and chips were excellent. The decor and service were also top-notch. I will definitely be back for the pie again.
I have not been to this Irish Pub for years. A great place to pop in for a beer and a quick bite if lunch. The service was very friendly and there was a mix of traditional pub fair and Irish classics. It was surprisingly quiet yet can imagine there would be an amazing atmosphere when it’s busy. The food was good but the beer was better.
Food was lovely, the people were very nice and it all came quite fast! Meals are pretty big so share an entrée and have one dish each that would be enough for 2 people. There are some days where there is live music it's lovely will definitely come back
