As we had just arrived in Launceston and were staying upstairs at the Grand Chancellor we chose Avenue Restaurant as our tired legs had nearly given up. What a great find! Service was fast, friendly and attentive. I had the Minute steak open sandwich served with mushroom duxelle, Roma tomato and rucola lettuce. It was served medium rare and tasted perfect. My partner had Black Angus ground beef burger served in warm... View all feedback.
What Stan Torp doesn't like about Avenue Restaurant:
let me start by saying I dont like giving bad reviews because I believe people always deserve a second chance but in this case the hotel Grand Chancellor deserves shutting DOWN not just deserving a bad review my self and my wife went to the hotel for Christmas dinner in 2016, we was looking forward to it because of the good reviews it had received on trip advisor but what a let down, we think the food was left overs... Although the dishes were well presented and delicious, the vegetarian diner was disappointed to find only one unmarked vegetarian option on the menu - the usual risotto. The lack of creative vegetarian options was disappointing, and the portion size was on the smaller side. The chicken option, on the other hand, was enjoyed by another diner and included baby roasted vegetables. Overall, the meal was tasty but lacking in vegetarian variety and portion size could be improved.
I treated my father to high tea at the Avenue Restaurant for his 87th birthday. We were seated at a beautifully arranged table and our server was initially friendly and efficient. We had a selection of tea to choose from. The bottom tier of the three-tiered stand had delicious finger sandwiches, the middle tier had wonderful cakes and slices, but unfortunately, the scones on the top tier were extremely hard. I couldn't even cut them with a knife. When I informed our server, she insisted they were fresh from the oven, but it was clear they had been microwaved and become hard. She offered us another serving of scones, which should have been her initial response. Despite this issue, the rest of the high tea experience was pleasant, but we do not plan on returning anytime soon.
Our dinners at this restaurant were fairly small, as our appetites were rather measured. However the meals and in particular the desserts were delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. We must give Donna, our friendly waitress a big tick for her charm and pleasant disposition. Though I didn't feel like drinking any alcohol, my wife was keen to have a glass of sparkling wine. She was given a choice of local or imported. She chose the local, Tasmanian wine. Her choice was very much to her delight and she took note of the label, Devils Corner. Denise definitely recommends it and I, well, I found it available on our return home to Sydney. Now I am popular at home :)

All in all a good place to dine with a superb list of local beers and wines.
