An excellent experience, overall. It was a great education on ingredients native to Malaysia. The courses however were hit and miss. Felt like some of them were overly complicated, with too much going on in terms of ingredients. On purely taste, other than the dessert, there was nothing memorable. Still worth a visit to see and learn about novel ingredients and enjoy superb views and service. View all feedback.
What Anya L doesn't like about Dewakan:
This is an incredibly experimental restaurant I personally found their dishes and flavours to be too unusual and overwhelming. I wouldn’t recommend this if you simply want to treat yourself to a fancy meal, this is rly only for those who appreciates this kind of stuff. Incredibly expensive for KL also at £400 for two with 2x wine glasses each. I had much better food around for £3. View all feedback.
Ambience: 5 Presentation: 5 Food: 4 Service: 3.5 Will I come back: Yes The restaurant 's use of indigenous Malaysian ingredients in their inventive dishes is absolutely fantastic. These are some of my favorites: “Savoury Drink of Mulberries”, “Octopus, Breadfruit”, “Mackerel, Quinine and Flowers”, “Grilled Mussels, Pisang Abu, Tapai Ubi”, “Weeds Ice”, “Ciku Ice Cream, Fermented Corn”. Weeds Ice was a unique and refreshing culinary experience. It consisted of shaved Asam Paya ice which was sour and served with a variety of 'weeds ' such as Ulam Raja, Asam Gelugor, Watercress, Fried Jackfruit Seed, and Pickled Mustard Seed. To enjoy the dish, you crush and mix the ingredients evenly for a harmonious blend of flavors. I can never get enough of the “Ciku Ice Cream, Fermented Corn”. The fermented corn provided a salty, cheese-like flavor that perfectly complemented the ice cream, and the Tuile added a lovely toasty fragrance. The drawback: We could hardly eat the last dish (Kuih Bakar) because we were too full. The restaurant didn’t allow flexibility for us to takeaway, which was disappointing. They insisted to dispose of the remaining food that we were actually paying. We were served by a waitress (wearing glasses) who seemed to be having a bad day. She was oddly impatient and arrogant during the food presentations and introductions.
Visited in Apr 2023 A good menu crafted from local ingredients sourced from different parts of Malaysia. The 2 3 starting dishes and the desserts were particularly very good. I felt that some of the dishes in the middle of the menu lacked a bit of flavour or had too many components to give it a defining flavour. The main course dishes lacked a bit of magic in my view which would be expected of a Michelin star restaurant. But the dessert dishes made up for it. Instead of wine pairing, we went for a few non alcoholic juices which were a good choice in my view. Service was good. The inspiration behind preparation behind the dishes were explained in detail. Before the start of the meal, we were taken on a kitchen tour which also included a short session on the ingredients which were used for the menu which was quite interesting. All in all, a place to definitely try if your are in KL. The overall experience is one to cherish as is expected of a Michelin star restaurant.
Wonderful dining experience at Dewakan! : My husband brought me to celebrate my birthday. Loved how they brought us to tour the kitchen and to introduce the ingredients used for the night. Thought that it was interesting how they source and used local produced in their dishes. I like the creativity behind the dishes and believed that there was a lot of thought process in making every individual dishes. A lot of attention was given towards the dining experience I was cold and they offered me a shawl, kept changing my cup of water to ensure that it was constantly hot. Would love to come back when they change their menu!

The hype is deserved the experience was an absolute delight. Starts with a tour of the kitchen and an introduction to the amazing Malaysian ingredients (including some lesser known ones) and cooking techniques that will feature in the meal. You’re then ushered into the dining room overlooking the KL skyline for your 12 course meal. Every single course was a delight and the story behind the ingredients and techniques used was as enjoyable as the food. This would be an excellent experience for anyone but it’s an even more special experience for Malaysians nowhere else have I discovered local ingredients treated with so much creativity, respect and even humour. Worth every sen.
