This cafe has a chuck wagon style that is super casual. It has a 4 burner cooktop and 1 cook. It feels like walking into your neighbor's home for breakfast, lunch, or dinner cooked by your neighbor's mom. The cafe opens early and closes late. View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about Mountain House Cafe:
There is no parking available, which is true for all of Harpers Ferry. I finally found a spot at the railway station and walked back up the hill, only to discover that the café was closed. The only option open was the general store, which didn't offer much in terms of options. I was simply looking for a morning coffee, but none of the other places in the city claimed to be open before 8:30. What the heck? I won't be... View all feedback.
Can't tell you how our expectations were blown away! Our server made us the best nachos I've ever had and a quesadilla you wouldn't expect out here. Fast and extremely friendly service. Please check this gem out, the view out on the deck is the best in harpers ferry.
I stopped here after hiking 12 miles and was very hungry. It's sort or confusing finding the cafe, but they have little feet glued to the floor to show you the way. When I entered the cafe there was a woman on the phone who gave me a look like, what do you want but didn't say anything and a guy who said that he wasn't clocked in yet, but gave us menus. It was weird, but we sat down outside. The guy really talked up the pepperoni roll so we ordered that and two sandwichs. Our pepperoni roll looked delicious, but was full of cheese and no pepperoni. We were a little confused, but our waiter seemed sort of out of it, so we let it slide. We ordered a tuna salad sandwich and a turkey sandwich. Each was $8 and neither came with any kind of chips or pickle, just a sandwich on bread on a paper plate. Both were fine, but not stellar. We went in to pay and the waiter started mindlessly chatting and seemed surprised/confused when we wanted to pay. He had to do the math to determine how much we owed and only took cash. Overall, it was a sub par experience and I wouldn't recommend this place.
We had breakfast here on a Sunday when it seemed the whole town was closed down. I'm so glad we found it! As other reviewers have said, it's small and quirky, but so welcoming in every way. The man who cooked our food was quiet but when we sat at the counter and engaged him in conversation, he told us about what it's like living in Harpers Ferry (the Appalachian Trail hikers, the history buffs who come through). He was absolutely delightful and before we knew it, hot eggs and pancakes were in front of us. It was a nice, memorable moment that we'll remember.
Cozy stop after a delightful day hike. The Cafe is on the second level of a historic inn and hostel. The ambiance is just so: an eclectic mix of AT hikers, locals, and tourists that represent a revolving cast of characters not unlike what one will find at the most well hidden gems of the world. Off the beaten path, this is where the marriage of creativity and cohesion spark a passion for life; a little oasis set amongst the rocky hills and rushing water, known amongst those who seek adventure, who crave its reprise and respite. Come in, drink tea or kombucha, watch the evening sun reflect off the carved rock cliffs as they advance toward the Shenandoah river, and know that in that moment, you are exactly where you need to be.
