The Woodman, originally built in 1727 as two cottages on a hill, still exudes a cozy homely atmosphere. Nearing the 19th century, retired policeman Henry Wale transformed part of the property into a small bar after obtaining a liquor license. The bar area, now expanded to accommodate more customers, features photographs reflecting the pub's rich history. In 1996, The Woodman underwent renovations by Discovery Inns, adding a rear bar, conservatory, restaurant, new kitchen, and updated facilities. Adjacent to Grovelands Park, the pub sits on land once belonging to brandy merchant Mr. Walker Gray, whose legacy continues through Taylor Walker brewery. The historical significance of The Woodman extends to a nearby green housing a refurbished wooden pound, once used for stray animals. Throughout its storied past, The Woodman has stood as a beloved establishment and a cherished part of the local community.
