It's not a trip to Dullstroom unless you've have a few beers and rather substantial bite at the Duck and Trout. It's your local pub away from home. Come friendly. Leave happy. View all feedback.
What User dislikes about The Duck And Trout:
2 x forellenfilet ordered. both were served half raw and could not eat them. food went back to the kitchen. when it was delivered, the waiter (if you can call it that) was dirty and had an open wound on his finger. we refused to pay. the waitress was very apologetic and said the normal cook was for the long weekend. not a manager in itself. shocking! shocking! shocking! we paid for our drinks and went and will never return.

Unfortunately, they allow to smoke in the restaurant, a public place, so that this was a blooming for me.

Nestled in the charming town of Dullstroom, Duck and Trout has long served as a beloved local pub, known for its vibrant atmosphere and hearty fare. While patrons rave about its delicious pizza and standout dishes like duck and cherry pie, some experiences have been marred by inconsistent service and occasional food shortages. Guests have reported issues with reservations, lengthy wait times, and unwelcomed secondhand smoke. Despite these hurdles, the friendly staff and inviting ambiance, complete with a roaring fire on chilly evenings, continue to attract visitors seeking a warm meal and a cold drink after a day of fishing.

Wanted to give less, we arrived and the place which wasnt busy. The sushi chef was unavailable and was said to only arrive later. We ordered drinks and waited 30 minutes, and it was the wrong type of tea. We had to ask for milk three times, before we got it after she brought out more tea, that we did not order. We ordered a simple breakfast that took 50 minutes to arrive and the tamato was more toasted than the bread which had no colour. The eggs had shells in them and one of the sausages was twice the size of the other one. The food was cold and the egg raw. Honestly dissappointing.
We went on a Friday night. My wife and I are Dullstroom old-timers, and we have been to Duck Trout many a times. We love wine, but we know this establishment does not specialise in wine. However, they always had at least one decent Sauvignon Blanc. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (which the waiter said was available), but he came back to say that they had no more Sauvignon Blanc available. My wife suggested that we go to another restaurant. I then asked the waiter if I could go and get our own wine, and he said yes. I did so. We had an open bottle of Diemersdal with about a glass of wine left, and a full one. I took both. When I got my bill, he had corkage (R168) for 2 bottles of wine. I told the waiter that the one bottle was almost empty. He then fetched the manager, who was clearly not impressed with us at all. I told him that the only reason I had to go back to our house to fetch wine was because they did not have a Sauvignon Blanc, and his response was that they do have a box and could sell us by the glass (which we had no clue about. I then said to him it is ok, I will just deduck the one corkage from the tip, at which stage he called his chuck out to escort me out of the restaurant. He also threatened me with physical force. On top of everything, the food was terrible. The duck and cherry pie was like a pie-soup, the trout was totally dry and the pizza was also as hard as nails. It is a real pity that an establishment that I supported for many years since Wayne owned it is now owned by a bombastic person with no manners. Fortunately Dullstroom is endowed with many excellent restaurnants, like Mrs Simpsons and we are always welcomed by our friends Brian and Stephen.
I would give Duck and Trout a 4.5 if I could, its so near perfection. I'm happy to give it a full 5 since they were the only place open at 18H00 on a sunday night. Duck and Trout first and foremost wins with atmosphere. Walking in on a misty, cold rainy night, the doors swing open to multiple fire places, old quality wooden furniture, cosy warm lighting. A lady was playing a bunch of famous old songs live on Piano, you just can't get such a warm atmosphere easily nowadays. Waiters were polite and very well mannered too, they made us feel looked after. Our (wood fire) pizza and coffee was respectfully priced, and deliscious too.

The food is excellent and the service is top-notch. This restaurant has undergone some changes over the past two decades, but it remains a fantastic dining spot. Although I didn't try the duck and cherry pie, I'm confident it is still the standout dish in town.
I adore this restaurant. I have created many wonderful memories here and have always been impressed by the food and service. A trip to Dullstroom is incomplete without a visit to the Duck and Trout. I have tried their burgers, pizza, curry, basically everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. I enjoy riding my bike there and appreciate that they accommodate smokers. Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you to the management and staff who made our experience at this restaurant special. Shoutout to all the waiters and waitresses, keep up the good work!
