What RollandButter doesn't like about La Mirage:
The decor is rather 'unusual ', and the seating area is quite small at the time we were there. However we were seated quickly by the host and soon discovered he had a good rapport with his diners and enjoyed joking with them. Despite the comments... View all feedback.
Really enjoyed our meal. Some of the best fish and chips I've ever had. The portions are huge, but you have to save room for dessert.
To be fair, fish and chips were fantastic. The fried chicken was very dry, but the fried banana and pineapple it came with were fantastic, really good. BUT, the owner was a major jerk to us. We’d called ahead and were late. Our fault. Long drive up the coast. No excuses. But he treated us horribly. Stared my wife down like he was going to fight her. Furious at her for being late. No other choices so we had to eat there. Decor and is creepy. Server was really nice but they get 1* for service because the owner’s conduct was inexcusable. Really nice townsfolk we talked with.
Quirky decor that gives the impression the restaurant doesn 't really know who it is. The seafood platter needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance but it 's worth the effort as the seafood is exceptional. The frilly cut tomato and carrot is a waste and they should sack off doing those. It 's really good value for the high quality and the size. It consists of very 'safe ' foods; lobster, langoustines, smoked salmon, crab, all fantastic quality, however it would be cool to see more interesting local foods on there, like sea urchin. The wine list is very affordable and the staff are lovely.
Highly recommended. My husband surprised me with a seafood platter for my birthday at la Mirage. We did a 160 mile round trip and it was 100% worth it. The platter needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance. It was certainly the freshest sea food I have ever tasted. Absolutely sublime. Home with a doggie bag as we couldn’t finish it all. Being presented with a birthday dessert was a lovely touch. Not expected by anyone but really added to the day out. The service was first class. The waiter was attentive and checked in with us regularly. We also enjoyed chats with the chef and owner. Both extremely courteous and keen to give us the best experience. I have read some folk making reference to the odd decor. It’s maybe a bit kitsch or old fashioned for some people but those of us in the north know the history of La Mirage. I’m personally delighted it’s not changed much over the years and feel it only adds to the ambience of the experience. La Mirage has always been renowned as one of the best fish restaurants in the highlands. I can honestly say it’s still my number one today.
I visited La Mirage takeaway, there is a restaurant but I like my food more with a view on the nearby river. My understanding is that restaurant and takeaway are sharing the same kitchen and food from this kitchen is delicious. I visit them every time I'm in the area and I enjoyed tasty fish, scampi and chips each time. Prices are very good for the quality and amount of food you're getting. Well worth to stop by if you are driving NC500 or just in the area, it won't take much time and you are about to have a very nice meal.
