We visited the Bannister Rd. location on a recommendation. I have to say the food was delicious!!A few things I was unimpressed with:1) The service was, well there really wasn't any, besides taking the order and delivering our food. We actually got up to get our own cutlery. We also had to ask for our beverages after placing the order.2) although the food is good, it could be great if they purchased a higher quality... What User doesn't like about Raj Palace:
One of the few Indian restaurants that give a decent portion of lamb, beef or chicken BUT the meat is poor quality and very fatty. Great Naan, flavourful curries and sauces unfortunately don't make up for the meat. Restaurant was not clean, tables and chairs stained and unkempt. Cluttered bar with kitchen goods and shelving in the entrance way.Midnapore location. View all feedback.
As we have tried and frequented the two north Raj Palaces in Calgary several times, we thought we'd try the Midnapore restaurant before trying the downtown location. As usual, the food tasted great! We had the delicious finely-roasted pomfret fish (a chef's special!) and my standard, Chettinad lamb curry, with great garlic naan and saffron rice. The flavours and textures were wonderful, and decidedly comparable to the other Raj Palace restos although with minor differences. But on returning home, both my wife and I were oddly thirsty, and felt oddly upset, even slightly disoriented, even intoxicated, as if we'd had something slightly psychedelic in something. And we didn't have any wine or spirits with the meal. The only thing that we could put it down to was MSG, that salty curse of all excellent cuisine. Now perhaps we were wrong, but suddenly being extraordinarily thirsty for much of the remaining evening was not usual by any means. Hence that MSG, to which we both have had reactions to before, had to be the culprit. Do not such chefs not know that garlic is one of the ultimate best flavour enhancers, even though it's much more hassle than MSG? And few will get upset on it.Because we were more than disappointed, our conclusion is to not ever return to that branch of Raj Palace! The one in Harvest Hills in the Beddington north side of the city is the best so far, and the chef and his wife are an amazing team.I hope the overall owner reads this and calls on the kitchen in Midnapore to respond to our suspicions.
Raj Palace Restaurant on 6th Ave. is the only restaurant in Calgary downtown core where one can find authentic south Indian cuisine. In addition to the standard South Indian vegetarian fare like dosa, idli, pongal etc, they also offer Chettinad style meat and sea food dishes. The place is slightly cramped and service is slow unless you opt for their lunch buffet that features a lot of interesting items that you do not come across in a standard Indian restaurant. In that aspect, Raj Palace Restaurant is unique.
Service was good, our server gave us a good recommendation on the "Chef's special" appetizer. The Paneer tikka was very good as well. The restaurant atmosphere was good. Overall this was a very pleasant dinning experience. We will be back.
We needed a change from the bland fast food we were having for 4 days, heard about this place and visited for lunch. ambience is good, service is good and the food is delicious, esp the veg dishes. prices are on the higher side compared to the general indian restts, but the quality compensates. would i go back there again? you bet I would.
I visited this place around last September when after about 7-8 days of going without Indian Food. I was on a short business trip and had not eaten anything indian/punjabi food. My boss had suggest this so didnt wait for anything. Place was a bit small but that wasnt a problem. I ordered for garlic nan and chilly paneer. Also asked them to pack onion uthappam. The food was a bit less spicy (probably cutomised to calgary taste) but was still very delicious. The quantity was a bit too much for a single person. Would visit first thing next time I'm in Calgary.
