What User doesn't like about Merthyr Bowls Club:
Ordered 'grilled' fish, and went as far as asking the Chef, came out battered. How? Why? That's not hard is it? Also ordered Medium Well steak came out blue and cold. If you are going to charge $30 a meal you really need to get it right. View all feedback.
A view you could eat at Merthyr Bowls Club keeps bringing me back again and again. I grab a Walter Mosley novel - one of America's best - and fly down (safely) through Newstead and Teneriffe to the Merthyr Bowls Club by the river - right beside it - in New Farm (grabbing a Roger's Lager off the tap on the way past the bar for a very reasonable $4.10. Friendly people all round - hipsters bowling bare foot some days, and folks in white with shoes on others - and over a sip of Roger's and finding my place in the Walter Mosley yarn (always finding it very hard to put his work down), I might take a look at the view once or 20: what a great view, and it's always a thrill to see the cat ferries pass and then hear and see the lap of the wash, only outdone by a big yacht with a mast or two motoring past. On the other side is Norman Park - it looks a long way away, but someone told me when she was a student at St.Lucia the students used to swim across the river. The food and service and people at the Merthyr Bowls Club are all very pleasant and one feels at home. I do like the salt and pepper calamari with the large and excellent salad and chips included, but, like the ribeye burger and fish and chips as well. There's always Tasmanian salmon - excellent - too, and my only request would be for more fresh fish varieties each week, like fresh Snapper and the local Barramundi, and maybe a swordfish steak (cut thin); just a thought. And after lunch, a few more pages of Walter Mosley over an hour or so, and catching up with friends in the evening. I have taken many friends to the Club from Melbourne and they love it. With my salt and pepper calamari this week, I had a nice Darenberg "olive grove" Chardonnay for $7 a glass, and I continue to enjoy that wine. Excellent place.

read moreI was here for an event and everything was going well until, the bar tenders where allowing people not apart of our event to add drinks to our tab and not just cheap ones. 5pm came around and the person running the show came to my mum and said you have 5 minutes to get everyone and all those presents out or they go in the bin. Not only was this lady rude she was completely dismissing the fact that thousands of dollars had been put through their bar and other cost associated with the event. Would no recommend this place to anyone again. We used to visit here a bit it after this I wouldn't again. The staff need some serious lessons in customer etiquette.

Attending a training course. Which luckily had lunches provided at the bowls club. In all I ate four meals here and enjoyed every one.
