Han Lao recently opened in Brentwood, for our first visit we tried finger foods with sticky rice. We tried the following: Fried chicken skins Lao sausage with jeow bong Trio of jeow Papaya salad (lao style) Chicken Larb Short ribs Everything was delicious and packed with flavor in every bite, we recently relocated to MO and it was nice to find a Laotian restaurant as I had been following its build and waiting for it... Absolutely amazing food, there was a bit of a wait but it was totally worth it.
The best Thai /Lao food you can get in St Louis! The sushi is a great plus!
We 're from the Chicago 'burbs, only visiting St Louis, and although we 're quite proud of the amazing variety of ethnic restaurants of really great food in Chicagoland, we do not have a Han Lao!!! Oh my, what a superb find! I loved reading the long feature article from a local news source framed and hung on the wall near the entrance of how this restaurant came to be. Sure enough, as per all the reviews my hubby read through beforehand, Han Lao cooking is impressive! First we ordered a shareable appetizer called Thum Muk Huong. I 'd never had anything like it before! Using chopsticks, we put the strips of green papaya and noodles on top of a cabbage leaf. Oh wow, spicy deliciousness! My hubby enjoyed his Pad Thai order because it was not sweet as one would find in a typical American Thai restaurant. Authentic Thai flavor! I ordered the Seafood Tom Yum red soup loaded with mussels, shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, glass noodles... simply fabulous! Spiciness is just right. It closes at 8:00 pm, so plan your evening! Next time we return to St Louis we will certainly plan to eat at Han Lao more than once in order to try the other entreés!
I go here often and there are so many options. They have some of the best sushi I have ever had, ramen bowls, and Thai food-like three restaurants in one! Also, I have a gluten allergy and they have complete knowledge of how to prepare food to accommodate. I highly recommend!!
I have to say I was disappointed with the food and service at this restaurant. I had been wanting to try it for some time. When we arrived we were the only people there. My husband ordered crab rangoon and Tom kha soup. The crab rangoon was very sweet almost like a dessert. I ordered the fried chicken skin starter which was supposed to come with a sauce. When I questioned the waitress she said it did not come with sauce even though it is printed on menu. I also ordered khao poo soup. It came with a thin watery flavorless broth. On the menu it said it contained ground pork which was not in the soup. I again questioned waitress. She said she would bring some. She returned with limp pale pork belly slices which actually made me feel queasy. We were the only couple in the restaurant the whole time and the staff was inattentive and only barely cordial. I was underwhelmed to say the least and will not be returning.
