Contribute FeedbackThe Royal has become a hub for both loyal patrons and curious newcomers, yet recent experiences reveal a mixed bag of delights and disappointments. While some diners have raved about the sensational tapas and exceptional Sunday lunches, others have encountered frustrating service and bland dishes. The atmosphere varies from welcoming to disheartening, with fluctuating staff attitudes and inconsistent food quality. Highlights include standout goat cheese fritters and live music that elevate dining experiences. Despite its charm, diners express concern over declining service and menu changes, leaving The Royal at a culinary crossroads for local food enthusiasts.
We made a reservation at The Royal for a special anniversary dinner with five people. The meal was amazing, with a variety of dishes ordered. We may have ordered too much, as we only had three pieces of patatas bravas left. The goat cheese was exceptional and I still can't stop thinking about it. The belly pork and mussels were delicious, as well as everything else, but those two dishes really stood out. All the food came out hot and the staff were lovely. Somehow we still managed to have dessert, which was also great. I had the almond cake and it was delicious. It had been years since I last visited, but I will definitely be coming back soon. I also want to mention the live music that was playing last night (Friday). The two musicians were really good and it was a nice change to have live music during a night out.
We made a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday evening and waited for 30 minutes to receive a glass of wine and a pint after being seated. Despite the restaurant only having 4 tables in use, we were not asked if we wanted any more drinks over the next hour. After flagging down a waitress to ask for another drink, we still had to wait an additional 25 minutes. Feeling ignored, we decided to pay our bill and leave after chasing after our second drinks with no success. It appears that the primary focus of the staff is to serve the bar area rather than the restaurant, which was disappointing considering the good food. We will not be returning.
We have been visiting The Royal for several years and have always had trouble securing a reservation. However, we were able to book online today. When we arrived, we were surprised to find the restaurant empty. Despite asking for service three times, we had to wait an hour to be served. We were then told that our food would take another 30 minutes. It seems that the restaurant has changed ownership, and we would not recommend booking a table there.
Delicious tasty food! Every dish was hot and yummy! We were a group of 4 and ordered different dishes between us so we had lots to compare. Not one complaint about the food, each dish consistently good and good portions too. The pate and coffee cheesecake are a must! Service at the start was slow and we waited quite a while for our drinks order to be taken and then only because we called over a waiter, then they never arrived and we had to ask again! Initially this was a little off putting as it was our first visit however it was busy and the food arrived in good time so this was soon forgotten. We all said we would go again without a doubt!
Excellent food and service, topped off with winning the quiz! Will definitely return for the food, belly pork was beautiful!
